HARLEM WEEK 2019: The 8 Events You Should Not Miss

Celebrate Harlem’s historic and cultural richness during HARLEM WEEKa Harlem-based month-long festival running from July 28 to August 31, 2019. HARLEM WEEK celebrates this year its 45th anniversary with a very strong theme: Our Local History Creates a Global Impacthighlighting the impact and influence of Harlem on the world. What originally started as a small tribute has now become one of New York’s longest running events, with over 100 events spread across the whole neighborhood, celebrating Harlem’s culture and brilliance. Here is a shortlist of the events you should not miss.

 

\ A Great Day in Harlem

When: July 28th, 2019 – Noon til 08:30pm
Where: US Grant National Park from 120th to 124th Strs & Riverside Dr.

A Great Day in Harlem is THE not-to-be-missed outdoor festival kicking off the month long celebrations of Harlem Week, with R&B, Gospel, Latin, Jazz and Dance, Arts & Crafts, and dozens of exhibitors and food vendors. This year, the event will star famous singers Nicole Bus and Kirk Franklin, and will pay tribute to award-winning director Spike Lee and the legendary members of Kool & the Gang.

 


 

\ Amateur Night Show Off at Apollo Theater

Every Wednesday in August 2019 – 7:30pm- 10:00pm
Where: Apollo Theater

Spend an exciting evening at the legendary Apollo Theater and cheer and jeer on recent Amateur Night’s winners coming together to show off their talent and compete to move on to the Finals on August 21st. At Amateur Night, you will be the one to decide who can on stage and who must leave the competition. Aspiring musicians, singers, dances, comedians, rappers and spoken word artists will do their best to please the audiences in the hope to become the next Aretha Franklin or James Brown!

 


 

\ From Memphis to Harlem: Celebrating a New Century of Soul

When: August 12th to 18th, 2019
Where: Various locations

 

we-are-memphis-logoAlthough separated by thousands of miles, Harlem and Memphis are definitely bonded together by a shared love for soulful music and food. To mark that sacred relationship, musicians and chefs from both cities will pay tribute to their hometown at select events during HARLEM WEEK, including special events on August 17th from 08:00pm to 10:00pm at Sylvia’s, Melba’s Restaurant and Dinosaur-B-Que restaurants.

 


 

\ SUMMER IN THE CITY

When: August 17th, 2019
Where: Harlem – 4 blocks on 135th street between 5th and St. Nicholas Aves

Summer in the City is the largest musical events of HARLEM WEEK, with outdoor concerts featuring R&B, Hip-Hop, Latin, Reggae, Rock and regional dance events. Also featuring Historic Black Colleges ‘Step Shows’ and an outdoor film festival.

 


 

\ NYC’s Children Festival

When: August 17th and 18th, 2019
Where: Howard Bennett Playground West 135th St. beta. Malcolm X Blvd. & 5th Avenue

NYC’s Children Festival is an exciting 2-day event for children aged 5 to 12 featuring outdoor festivities such as daily performances showcasing sporting events, face painting, dance, step shows, Hip-Hop, music, poetry, arts & crafts, storytelling and children programs.

 


 

\ Harlem Day

When: August 18th, 2019
Where: Harlem – 4 blocks on 135th street between 5th and St. Nicholas Aves

‘Harlem Day’ is the culminating point of HARLEM WEEK. It will feature 4 outdoor stages of entertainment and over 150 vendors and exhibitors among Harlem’s finest businesses. It will also include the Auto Show with a parade of automobile from 09:00am to 10:00am.

 


 

\ Harlem Restaurant Week

When: August 19th to September 1st, 2019
Where: Various locations

While already worldwide renowned for its famous writers and musicians, Harlem has also now become a major food destination. This year’s first ever Harlem Restaurant Week has been created to celebrate the neighborhood’s unique food diversity and flavors bringing together over 30 local partners. Participating restaurants will be offering prix-fixe menus and specials with enough diversity to please all tastebuds, from international cuisine to comfort food, drinks, take out, and even live events.

\ Harlem Jazz & Music Festival

When: August 24th to August 31st, 2019

For eight days and nights, local restaurants and historic sites will be taping to the beat with Harlem Jazz & Music Festival. HARLEM WEEK’s newest festival will salute iconic names in various genres of music and dance, starring famous artists such as Legacy, Impact Repertory Theatre, Troubled Mal, Young Devyn and Vy Higginsen Gospel for Teens.
